Millard is proud to offer the Core Knowledge Program at two elementary schools. The Millard Core Knowledge Program provides cultural literacy through a sequential and challenging curriculum rooted in the E.D. Hirsch Core Knowledge Sequence and philosophy. The Core Knowledge Sequence is based on the belief that knowledge builds on knowledge. As students progress through the Core Knowledge Program, the learning progression is content-specific, cumulative, coherent, and context-specific. The program develops rich reading and writing skills using the Spalding Method of phonics, Shurley English, and Open Court. The Into Math curriculum is taught based on a progression of topics within numbers, algebra, geometry, and data. This curriculum includes history, geography, science and health, music, and visual arts. The teacher-directed explicit instruction establishes high expectations while meeting students’ needs and fosters analytical thinking. Students are challenged through an in-depth curriculum that develops higher-level thinking skills and establishes a solid foundation to build upon. Core Knowledge Schools in Millard
Millard offers the Core Knowledge Program at Cather and Disney Elementary Schools. Core Knowledge has been at Cather Elementary since 1995. In 2015, the Core Knowledge Program at Cather was first recognized as a Core Knowledge School of Distinction. As a result of increased demand and the district’s commitment to offering parent-choice programs, Core Knowledge expanded to Disney Elementary in 2016. In 2024, Disney became a School of Distinction. The Millard Core Knowledge Program at Cather Elementary and Disney Elementary are parent choice programs offered by the Millard Public Schools. For more information, please contact the schools.
